Milenko Lazarevic Obituary & Cause Of Death: Dr. Milenko Lazarevic, a highly respected and beloved physician among the Serbian and Balkan diaspora in Chicago, passed away unexpectedly due to multiple heart attacks. The details of his funeral will be announced later.
Early Life and Medical Career
Born in Belgrade and originally from Montenegro, Dr. Lazarevic completed his medical education at the University of Belgrade. In 1989, he moved to Chicago in search of a better life. Here, he focused on internal medicine and earned his PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
“I was meant to finish the two-year term and head back home. That’s what I had intended, but as that contract was coming to an end, horrible things began to happen, the conflict in the old Yugoslavia broke out, and I made the decision to stay put. I continued to work as a doctor and specialized as an internist. I have had my own practice for 20 years,” Dr. Lazarevic shared in an interview with the Serbian Times.
A Legacy of Compassion and Dedication
Dr. Lazarevic, affectionately known as “Dr. Laza” by his patients, was often the first medical professional immigrants saw after arriving in the United States. He treated everyone equally, regardless of race, religion, or nationality. “I never saw people differently because of their race, religion, or nationality; to me, they were all the same and in need of assistance. As it happens, individuals find it easier to trust someone who speaks their language fluently, which makes them feel safer and happier. This is somewhat normal,” he said.
As a result, nearly 70% of his patients came from the former Yugoslavia, including Serbs, Bosniaks, Montenegrins, Croats, Macedonians, Slovenes, and Albanians.
Serving the Immigrant Community
Dr. Lazarevic’s clinic was also known for conducting medical examinations for Green Card applications. He was the only physician from the former Yugoslavia licensed to perform such work, making him a vital resource for many Balkan immigrants.
Conclusion
Dr. Milenko Lazarevic’s passing leaves a significant void in the Serbian and Balkan communities in Chicago. His dedication, compassion, and tireless service have left an indelible mark on countless lives. As we await details of his funeral, we honor and remember the legacy of a physician who not only healed but also brought comfort and trust to his patients. Dr. Lazarevic’s memory will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him.
