Pennsylvania State Police report that a car accident on Interstate 79 killed a 17-year-old girl from Fairview and caused significant traffic detours on I-79 northbound for much of Sunday. The tragic accident occurred at 12:42 p.m. on I-79 northbound, north of the Kearsarge exit near Millcreek Mall. The victim, a passenger in a car driven by a 19-year-old girl, died in the collision.

According to state police investigators, the young motorist was approaching Interstate 79 north of Kearsarge (exit 180). As her car merged onto I-79 from the ramp, it crossed the right lane of travel and moved into the left lane, colliding with another northbound vehicle. Following the incident, the driver lost control of her vehicle, which rolled several times, ejecting the 17-year-old passenger. The car came to rest on its roof in the right lane of traffic. The other northbound vehicle stopped in the median. Two individuals from Pittsburgh in the other vehicle were unharmed.

Millcreek Paramedic Service transported both juveniles from the rolled-over vehicle to UPMC Hamot. The driver was brought in for treatment at 1:17 p.m., while the passenger was pronounced deceased due to her injuries. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook stated that the teenager died as a result of numerous blunt force wounds and that she was unrestrained when ejected from the car. State police are still investigating the incident.
