Southern Comfort in a Bowl: Classic Gumbo Recipe

Heat 1/2 cup of oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour to make a roux, stirring constantly until it turns dark brown.

Stir in 1 diced onion, 1 diced green bell pepper, and 2 diced celery stalks.

Add 3 cloves of minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes.

Pour in 6 cups of chicken or seafood broth and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and add 1 pound of sliced andouille sausage, 1 pound of peeled and deveined shrimp, and 1 cup of diced okra.

Simmer for 20-30 minutes until flavors meld and shrimp is cooked.

Serve over cooked rice and garnish with chopped green onions.
