12-Year-Old Girl Found Dead: A 12-year-old girl’s body was discovered in a north Houston creek early Monday morning. Houston Police Department investigators and Mayor John Whitmire held an evening press conference, stating they have reason to believe the girl sneaked out of her home sometime around 10 p.m. Sunday night. She had not been reported missing.

How Did the 12-Year-Old Die?

Houston police believe the girl was killed, and they are working diligently to identify the perpetrator. The victim, believed to be 12 years old, was found in a creek located in the 400 block of West Rankin Road at approximately 6 a.m. on Monday. According to Mayor Whitmire, the girl’s mother last saw her around 10 p.m. Sunday when she put everyone to bed. It is believed the girl left home between 10 p.m. and midnight, and she was reportedly talking with her 13-year-old boyfriend on the phone that night.

Authorities Investigating

The Houston Police Department is actively investigating the girl’s death. On Tuesday, Mayor Whitmire released new details about the case during a city council meeting. Authorities confirmed the victim was found at a creek in the 400 block of West Rankin Road at about 6 a.m. on Monday.

Police Statement

“Someone has taken one of our innocent children,” acting police chief Larry Satterwhite said at the press conference. “We believe someone did this horrible thing to her, and we are here to ask for your help.” Mayor Whitmire added, “It makes me angry that we have dangerous criminals on the streets of Houston.” HPD is reviewing surveillance video to follow up on leads, describing the circumstances as suspicious and indicating they believe foul play is involved.

Police have not commented on the condition of the girl’s body. The medical examiner’s office is working on an official identification of the victim, but both Satterwhite and Whitmire have spoken to the girl’s mother. “Of course, she is devastated.
